The Carnival cruise ship Victory struck a section of the pier with its bow while docking August 2nd at the West Side passenger terminal in Manhattan, causing rush-hour traffic tieups on adjacent streets and the West Side Highway.
No injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred as the Victory returned from a four-day cruise to Canada and New England.
Helicopter traffic reporters said the bow of the ship apparently struck a terminal walkway that overhangs the pier, causing an 8-foot long, 3-foot deep crease in the front of the ship and a similar crease in the walkway.
In a prepared statement released by Carnival shortly after 9 a.m. , the cruise line said:
"Around 7 a.m. this morning, August 2, as the cruise ship Carnival Victory was in the process of docking at one of the west side piers in Manhattan, the vessel came in contact with the pier causing minor damage to the ship and pier.
"No guest or crew injuries were reported and the ship is expected to sail this afternoon on its next voyage as scheduled. A comprehensive investigation is underway as to the exact cause of the incident."
